Merry Xmas (sponsored by...)
I imagine there's a special place in Hell for people who, either through greed or simple machismo that distorts from the true meaning of Christmas. Instead of celebrating the birth of our Savior, they celebrate something I call "Xmas".
Like many pagan festivals in America (see below), Xmas is timed to coordinate with a holiday, namely Christmas. Gifts, food and fun are all rolled into a sort of mini-vacation or Thanksgiving Part II in late December. There are many weeks of preparation in anticipation of this festival including shopping for things we can't afford to impress people we don't care about.
Darn, I was off to such a good start on this entry, but I simply don't have time to finish. More complete thoughts later. P.S. Anyone up for Hawaii for New Years? Not sure if I'm going yet, but it would be nice to visit Susi. I promise not to wake up with a tattoo this time.
Other pagan festivals that coordinate with ours:
Halloween - the night below All (Hallowed) Saints Day - a night of sin before giving saints some facetime
Mardi Gras (literally: Fat Tuesday) - the night before Ash Wednesday - a night of sin before you have to give it all up for Lent.
At any rate, how would you like to be this guys neighbor?

Hey John,
It is so funny that you wrote this and I read it the morning after filling out a "questionaire" for Jacob's school (he is our 11 year old). The teacher at his school sent out a paper for the parents to fill out questioning if you celebrate Christmas, Hannaka, Kwanza, etc. and what it means to your family. Well, you know me, I had to stir it up a bit and put down that Christmas is a time to remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus and that we tell that story every Christmas Eve and that is what Christmas is all about (though here the schools actually do say the Pledge and use the word "God", support our country and President and are patriotic, including having sayings with the word God on their walls...so different from California. I know that is a bit off your subject but with all this comes comments from teachers about what the holiday is about and celebrating, basically, as Christians). Thanks for letting me know that I am not the only one who feels the way you do (though we do celebrate with the Christmas tree, not holiday tree, and gifts so I do shop for bargains, hence my 2:00 a.m. trip to Wal-Mart). Jacob was very upset that the school is telling him that we are now putting up holiday trees and forgetting the true meaning of Christmas!

I too started turning my head from Santa and wondered where the celebration of Jesus had gone. But today, while watching the "Wiggles" (being a parent, teehee-Disney Channel) soon realized he still lives. Well, at least in Austrialia. It was their new "Christmas Movie". Those Ausies have not forgotten about the celebration of Jesus. Rent it! Buy it! You will enjoy it! Kids or no kids!
